What-is-Heliotherapy

The #nosunisgoodsun movement has me rolling my eyes because I strongly believe in the benefits of intentional helio (or sun) therapy. I know, I know. I own a med spa, and I’m telling you to go out in the sun. It may sound counterintuitive, but intentional early-morning and late-day sun exposure, or heliotherapy, does wonders for a variety of skin concerns, lifts the mood, boosts vitamin D, and actually helps to protect your skin cells!

What is Heliotherapy?

Heliotherapy is the use of natural sunlight for the treatment of certain skin conditions. It is a form of phototherapy.

How Does Heliotherapy Work?

The ultraviolet (UV) part of the sunlight spectrum has beneficial effects in small doses.

  • Short-wavelength UVB and longer-wavelength UVA induce vitamin D production and other chemicals that protect skin cells.
  • The UV radiation is anti-inflammatory, immune suppressing, and antiproliferative.

The daylight part of the sunlight spectrum can also be useful in the treatment of skin conditions.

Vitamin D Plays a Big Role

The Cleveland Clinic found that “about 1 billion people worldwide have vitamin D deficiency, while 50% of the population has vitamin D insufficiency.” Even my brother in law, who’s job requires him to be outside all day, has tested as vitamin D deficient. He is now taking a prescription vitamin D to supplement but could also benefit from intentional early and late day heliocare on exposed skin.

Be wise with your heliotherapy by exposing skin to the gentler UV rays in the early and late parts of the day, always apply a vitamin C serum and quality broad spectrum SPF on the face (I love Revision Intellishade!)
